The Story

sanctuary built from resilience, love, and the belief that even life’s wild detours can lead to extraordinary destinations.

Forty-five years ago, Fran left Seoul as a teenager, carrying little more than an artist’s heart and a longing for freedom. The tanks that rumbled past her school windows marked a path she refused to follow. She moved to New York, where the simple act of saying, “I want to be an artist,” felt like an act of rebellion.

carambola,

Her Restaurant Fran began crafting dishes to remember. To her, every bite told a story: the warmth of a family meal, the tang of a Korean childhood, the spice of resilience.
With no experience in the restaurant world, she faced hurdles that would have turned most away. The local market didn’t sell Napa cabbages for her kimchi. The climate refused to cooperate with the flavors she carried in her heart. Yet, Fran persisted, transforming limitations into opportunities.

Today, the tables at Carambola are filled with dishes that speak of Fran’s journey—her mother’s recipes reimagined with the freshest local ingredients. Travelers from around the world, including Koreans far from home, find in her meals not just food, but a sense of belonging.

Mango Moon and Carambola are more than a hotel and a restaurant—they are testaments to the life Fran has lived and the lessons she’s learned. She calls it “Life Art,” the act of turning hardship into beauty, of shaping dreams not from faraway ideals, but from the raw material of the here and now.
